ATS keywords checklist

Keywords matter—but only when they’re real.

Step 1: Identify role-critical keywords

From the job description, extract:

• [ ] tools/technologies (e.g., dbt, Airflow)
• [ ] methods (e.g., experimentation, data modeling)
• [ ] domain terms (e.g., fraud, retention)
• [ ] role responsibilities (e.g., stakeholder management)

Step 2: Place keywords in the right spots

• [ ] Summary: 2–4 core keywords (only those you truly have)
• [ ] Skills: grouped keywords for coverage
• [ ] Experience: keywords appear in proof bullets (Action + Result)

Step 3: Proof check

For each keyword you include:

• [ ] Can you describe a real project where you used it?
• [ ] Can you explain your contribution?
• [ ] Can you defend it in an interview?

Step 4: Avoid stuffing

Red flags:

• repeated tool lists
• “skills paragraphs” with no outcomes
• copying job description phrases verbatim
