ATS keywords checklist
On this page
Keywords matter—but only when they’re real.
Step 1: Identify role-critical keywords
From the job description, extract:
- [ ] tools/technologies (e.g., dbt, Airflow)
- [ ] methods (e.g., experimentation, data modeling)
- [ ] domain terms (e.g., fraud, retention)
- [ ] role responsibilities (e.g., stakeholder management)
Step 2: Place keywords in the right spots
- [ ] Summary: 2–4 core keywords (only those you truly have)
- [ ] Skills: grouped keywords for coverage
- [ ] Experience: keywords appear in proof bullets (Action + Result)
Step 3: Proof check
For each keyword you include:
- [ ] Can you describe a real project where you used it?
- [ ] Can you explain your contribution?
- [ ] Can you defend it in an interview?
Step 4: Avoid stuffing
Red flags:
- repeated tool lists
- “skills paragraphs” with no outcomes
- copying job description phrases verbatim
