How to write a career change resume

learn career-change resume tailoring

Career change resumes are about translation: turning your past work into proof for a new role.

What to prioritize

  • a role-aligned summary (“Transitioning into…” + proof)
  • transferable skills (stakeholders, problem solving, leadership)
  • projects or self-directed work that matches the target role
  • keywords you truly used, even if in a different context

How to structure

  • Put relevant skills near the top
  • Highlight the most relevant 1–2 roles first (even if they weren’t “the same title”)
  • Use bullets that show outcomes in the new domain’s language

Avoid

  • claiming expertise you don’t have yet
  • focusing too much on old-role-specific jargon
