How to write a career change resume
On this page
Career change resumes are about translation: turning your past work into proof for a new role.
What to prioritize
- a role-aligned summary (“Transitioning into…” + proof)
- transferable skills (stakeholders, problem solving, leadership)
- projects or self-directed work that matches the target role
- keywords you truly used, even if in a different context
How to structure
- Put relevant skills near the top
- Highlight the most relevant 1–2 roles first (even if they weren’t “the same title”)
- Use bullets that show outcomes in the new domain’s language
Avoid
- claiming expertise you don’t have yet
- focusing too much on old-role-specific jargon
